El aire húmedo se escurre entre los edificios,
premonición de la nieve viajera del norte
que congelará pronto las tuberías;
nada detiene a los turistas
que disparan selfies sin parar:
las pantallas de las corporaciones de fondo hacen de esta plaza
el lugar sin noche;
de un vórtice
brotan sonidos guturales
nasales ásperos
sonidos de explosiones labiales
arrastrados con lentitud
con la lengua deliciosa y húmeda
que empuja dientes torcidos, colmillos puntiagudos
al fruncir nariz y entrecejo;
fricciones turbulentas llanas
un estruendo de saliva,

Judith Santopierro is a writer, editor and translator born in the high mountains of Veracruz, Mexico. She is the author of the poetry books Palabras de Agua (2010) and Tiawanaku. Poems from the Mother Coqa (2019), translated into English by Ilana Luna and a finalist in the international Sarah Maguire Prize for Poetry in Translation in the United Kingdom (2020). Her work has been published in the Anuario de Poesía Mexicana 2006 (Fondo de Cultura Económica), The Brooklyn Rail, Rio Grande Review, The Shared Language of Poetry: Mexico and United States (Literal Publishing, 2023) and The PALABRA Archive of the Library of Congress in Washington. She was awarded a residency at the International Writing Program (2022) and the Fiction Narrative scholarship at the San Agustín Center for the Arts in Oaxaca (2023). Currently, she is pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing in Spanish at the University of Iowa.
